Subject: The mystery boxcar series
"85842_Marshalltown_IA-1968-Jim_Sands.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1000x394 (24bit)

Hi everyone,

Someone has recently asked me about the attached shot of 85842 - he asked why the EL diamond had a black center.

Doing a bit of research, I had one other shot in my collection of a similarly "repatched" 85000-series 40' boxcar (without the black
centered EL diamond), which is also attached.

Here's the mystery: Looking at the car, and the large red "patch panel" under the diamond logo, you'd assume this was a former Erie
car. However, this series does NOT appear in the EL Diagram Book from 1975, *NOR* does it appear in the Erie Diagram Book from 1952.

The two car photos are from 1968 and 1969.

So... did the Erie buy these cars after 1952, and they were retired prior to 1975? It's just intriguing that the Erie and EL had a
nice hole in their boxcar series for the 85000-series (they had cars in the 83000, 84000 and 86000-series)

- Paul
