Jim & List,

This indeed is the foot of Erie Street. You are looking at the Lackawanna's
retail coal trestle. It originally had a ramp up into the building where
hoppers and boxcars were pulled up, and a return gravity ramp. This was
quite dangerous and ate up quite a bit of the limited yard space. The
conveyer was installed and now with your ad I have a better date, probably
circa 1903. Attached is a photo showing the original car ramps.

When the complex was built in 1879 the retail pockets were part of the
lake-side trestle. But as business expanded, the retail trestle was moved to
Erie Street as you see it in this photo. IIRC this trestle lasted to just
after WWII, when it was torn down and replaced with a round coal silo for
retail sales.

I wrote a two-part article on the yard in Diamond Vol. 19, Numbers 3 & 4.
This coal trestle complex was the reason the DL&W came to Buffalo.
