The re-routing of the Boonton Line made a lot of sense from the
perspective of cutting commuter plant and operating costs. However,
it's hard to see how anyone who went out and took a look at the
Greenwood Lake Branch could believe that it would handle the freight
traffic that rolled through Mt View to Clifton on the Boonton Line. Even
running everything from Binghamton on the Erie main, the GL Branch
(which had never seen anything heavier than 5 or 6 Stillwells or 12 car
freights in my recollections), could not support the traffic from
Scranton and Phillipsburg. Speed and weight were just not major factors
in its design and construction. Even if you never went out on the road,
rolling a grade profile/curves chart out on the conference table should
have raised a red flag....

Still, moving traffic to the Erie side made for some good train watching
when I moved from New Brunswick up to Waldwick in 1963. I saw a lot of
very long fast freights for a few years. That traffic had dropped off
by 1968 when I moved to San Juan.

I was too late to get a photo of the Mt View tower, has anybody got one
of it while in use?
