I noticed these in older shots of the 1857 as well. This is a pretty rare
photo as it shows the 1857 (the only roadswitcher set up as a slug mother)
in the short period of time when it WAS a slug mother.

The projection at the left appears to be a radio antenna, but I have no idea
what the contraption at the right is. Note in the 1857 photo I've attached
you can see both more clearly. After its year-long stint in slug service in
1966, the 1857 went back to road service. In the other attached image taken
by George Elwood, the radio antenna is very clear, but there's no sign of
the other item seen in the 1966 photos - not even a hole where it might have
been mounted, though the attached 1966 photo makes it look like it's going
into the right-hand numberboard (perhaps because there was an electrical
connection in there?)

My only guess is that this apparatus had something to do with communicating
with the hump tower operator?
