Since this is once again Thanksgiving week and very soon every tourist
line in the country will be running their Santa trains, I thought it
would be fun to look at some scant information on a Santa Express that
ran on the brand new E-L, the Friday after Thanksgiving, 1960.

Wyckoff's was the department store in Stroudsburg (apparently having
some affiliation with Sears) and they sponsored this excursion of
children and parents from East Stroudsburg to Gouldsboro and return, to
meet and greet Santa there and bring him back to Stroudsburg and
Wyckoff's for the Christmas season. The train left E.S. (9:30), stopped
at Cresco (9:50) to pick up more kids and got to Gouldsboro (10:30).
Santa gets on (no mention of how Santa got from North Pole to
Gouldsboro) and after reversing the position of the locomotives the
train starts back; a second stop at Cresco (11:15) and final arrival in
E.S. (11:45). The Santa Express was sandwiched between the westbound
(L-47) and eastbound Pocono Express (L-2) according to the timetable.

Another article mentioned that the train sold out quickly at 1200
tickets (Children- 25¢. Adults- 50¢). A poor microfilm photo showed
Santa greeting kids in one of the coaches. In the background can be
seen the large oval mirrors on the bulkhead, indicating a Lackawanna
modernized coach. This must have been a hefty train at 15 cars.

There had to have been a lot of photos taken that day (even a few of the
train). Maybe some of these will eventually surface.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
