Subject: Phoebe Snow in HO

Recently Blake Tatar dropped off the JJL Models' Phoebe Snow diner and
tavern-lounge that he built and painted. They are works of art and just
beckon to be shared here. I attach two of Blake's own photos.

These cars happily joined the Phoebe Snow Rapido cars I have been
outshopping (refitted side skirts, close-coupling, and Reboxx wheelset
replacements). I love long passenger trains so my aim is always to find the
longest plausible consist for any train modelled. A photo in John Boehner's
EL Passenger Trains Vol 1 (p.21) gives a basis for a twelve-car Phoebe that
includes five coaches and three sleepers.

I share a very hasty shot of the full consist. She was a beatiful train in
real life. She makes a beautiful train as a model.

Finishing this long-simmering project, especially at this time of year,
reminds me of the wonderful network of people in our hobby and the specific
folks who have made this train possible. Thanks have to be expressed to:
Jason Shron of Rapido for bringing out his basic coaches, sleepers, and
baggage cars painted and lettered for Lackawanna; Joe Lofland for giving us
beautiful models of Miss Phoebe's two signature cars; artisans like Blake
whose skillsets save us both time and agony in the workshop while at the
same enhancing our model railroads; modelers like Bill Botkin whose
published (RMC Nov '05 ) ways of further detailing the DL&W Proto 2000 E8s
will be imitated in a future project; and authors like John Boehner whose
research and writings just broaden our horizons in so many ways. I am also
very gratefully aware that -- even though I have come to the ELHS from a
lifelong Erie exposure -- the Lackawanna afficionados amongst you have grown
in me a very deep appreciation of the DL&W, so much so that my initial plans
to run an EL Phoebe Snow were transformed into wanting with gusto an
original and "pure" Lackawanna version.

And a Happy Thanksgiving to you all!!

Joe Braun
