Subject: Portage bridge for elhs daily digest

The new Portage bridge is scheduled to open Nov. 28.

Last February we went over to Letchworth to see if we could get close enough to get some decent photos. It was 70 that afternoon and most of the snow had melted in the previous days.

Starting at the head of Trail 2 it was soon realized that we were on an old road.
After about a mile we came to an underpass/tunnel below the track.
It was large enough for a decent size farmers wagon to pass thru.
On the other side we followed the r-o-w on the embankment above the tracks.

It wasn't long before the orange woven fence was encountered and that was followed for about half a mile bringing us to a point about 75 ft. above the west side construction site. During this part of the hike we crossed the original r-o-w and discovered what could only be an old borrow pit (green).

It was a very impressive site on both sides of the gorge.
Reversing directions we followed the old r-o-w (red), until we came to an old road which turned out to be the south end of Trail 2(white) . Swamp in yellow.

I decided that we should continue along a narrow path next to a small stream flowing in the direction of the bridge. We came to a large valve wheel sticking out of the roadbed.
Looking ahead and peering thru the undergrowth there we discovered an old cut stone dam about 12' high (blue). It was earth bermed on the backside and had been washed out enough to only contain about 3' of water and ice. This must have been the supply for the depot area.
A box structure can be seen in an old photo on the south side of the bridge.
