She ran in 2 sections to Binghamton the lead section with William White in
D&H business car, and the trailing section pictured above with the Phoebe
Obs. I believe that the two sections were combined at Binghamton with
White's blue business car carrying a PHOEBE SNOW drumhead. I shot it at
Hornell with my Instamatic Camera, as I was home from college at Dansville
for Thanksgiving.

Boy, does that bring back memories. Having been raised in my later years, in
Chatham, NJ, in the later 1950s, I befriended many DL&W Engineers, one being
Andy Barbara, who was the regular Engineer on the Phoebe Snow out of
Hoboken, NJ. I happened to be back home after being discharged from the
Army, and heard about the "last run" of the Phoebe Snow. Thus I went down to
my old "railfanning spot", i.e. Summit, NJ where the Phoebe always stopped.
As I remember an "advanced section" came in first, with a heavyweight
business car on the rear, and then the "real Phoebe" arrived shortly after.
I was standing on the platform where the headend normally stopped, and as
the lead unit came to a stop, Andy recognized me!!!! He started hollering
for me to come up in the cab, as he obviously hadn't seen me for some years.
Talk about "old home week"! Andy wanted me to ride with him to Scranton, or
at least Dover, as I had done many, many times before I left for college. I
was heartbroken, and so was he, that I couldn't ride with him, as I had no
way to return home, plus I had my mother's car. Author: HotWater
