W D Burt recently brought to the EL List's attention the Erie serious planning to build a new line from Cleveland to Galion bypassing the roller-coaster of the 1st Subdivision of the Cincinnati Division (later known as the Kent Division)--he noted to us that some Erie Annual Reports in the early part of the Twentieth Century showed the proposed line. Thanks to a recent gift to the ELHS Archives by Richard F. McCleery we have, attached, more ghostly evidence. The attachment is of a fragment of an Index Map to the maps of the Cincinnati Division c. 1905. Hopefully the scan quality and your computer will permit you to see--just east of the CCC&StL (Big Four) Crossing at Galion is a line drawn parallel to the Big Four labeled "Proposed Line to Randall 97.8 miles". This argues that the "Cleveland-Galion" proposal was actually a Randall (North Randall), O. to Galion line. This makes sense since it would have permitted trains to avoid dropping into the Lake Erie basin and then climbing out again. The proposed line sounds like it may have paralleled the CSXT (former NYC) then-planned/building Cleveland Short Line for part of its route. On behalf of the ELHS Archives, thank you, Mr. McCleery, for helping to enlighten us.MJC
