Subject: Old photos!

Well, old for me, at least! I dug these out of my archives. I shot these
almost 10 years ago (yikes!). I'll put a few up every so often to help
spread 'em out. They aren't exactly EL, but definitely EL-related.

The first two shots show a Conrail "dirt train" ascending the grade into
Great Notch, NJ on the Boonton Line. This was the first "big freight" on the
Boonton Line since 1980, and it was sure an impressive sight to see a trio
of GE diesels blasting up the hill, entering the two-track territory at
Great Notch interlocking (just like EL eastbounds!). The train was made up
of former PRR ore cars, and loaded to the brim with dirt being moved to
Jersey City as part of a swamp construction (I kid you not!) in Wayne. Of
course, you can't recreate this scene anymore - almost everything here is
gone: The GE diesels, the PRR ore cars, the interlocking and second track,
and now there's catenary overhead. The old adage - "shoot it while you can"
- holds very true. I never expected this scene to disappear.

The third shot shows an NJT GP40PH-2 heading out of Boonton, NJ. The Boonton
freight house (and yes, I saw its pink paint job, though it's not as bad as
I thought it would be - it's a "sandy" pink color) is directly behind me.
The old second main through town (the lead for the Boonton drill) can be
seen in the weeds at the left. Today, even this scene has dramatically
changed - all those trees are gone, replaced by a new concrete wall and road
bridge at the left. The main line rail is now welded. And this particular
diesel is on the endangered species list now.
