"EL_CarOrder.jpg" - image/jpeg, 250x606 (256c)

Several months ago, there was some discussion about how local freight crews (drills, roustabouts, hauls, way freights, etc.) were directed by the local station agent or clerk to place and pull cars from customer sidings. I finally came across the form that the EL used for this, called a "Car Order". I have posted a scan. This one was from Rutherford NJ station to the BJ Drill. This order us for just a part of the Rutherford Drill's usual daily activity, which required multiple car orders. The freight clerk at Rutherford would prepare these throughout the day, as he received updates from customers as to whether they were ready for a car delivery or had emptied a car previously placed. Obviously the clerk would first prepare an order for the sidings that the crew went to first; in the case of the BJ Drill, that would be the team tracks and freight house, then Sun Chemical. Before 1970, the Drill would then drop back to BJ Tower and cross over to the Carlton Hill branch, working there thru mid-day. This Car Order shows some of the customers on the branch, but not Royce Chemical; the clerk probably prepared a separate Order for Royce. Later in the day, the agent would need to have an order ready for Grand Union and Curtis Wright, up on the Bergen County Line, which the Drill worked in late afternoon and early evening. (This pattern changed around 1970, when the Drill worked Grand Union and Potter Bros in the early afternoon, then the Carlton Hill Branch later in the day).

Perhaps this is of interest to you modelers looking to follow EL operating procedures.
