Subject: E8 fuel tank drain plugs
"812_PRT_coll_650.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1325x870 (24bit)

Hi folks,

While scanning some negatives tonight, I began to notice something I never
caught onto before.

Some E8's appear to have either fillers or drain plugs installed along the
bottom edge of their fuel tanks - some on the engineer's side, others on the
fireman's side - more common on the engineer's side than fireman's (right in
the radius at the bottom) - I've attached a sample image so you can see what
I mean.

Anyone know what the purpose of these were? The only units I've been able to
identify with these "plugs" are 812 and 820-833.

It does appear that these plugs were later removed on many of these units.
Or have these always been on them and since they'd often be in shadow I've
never noticed them before? I'm stumped here! Any thoughts?

- Paul
