For what it's worth, here's a shot of a ballast train westbound out of Port Morris 4 1/2 months into ConRail.
I don't know why the 1236 was in between the 2nd and 3rd hoppers. For the record GP35 2576 was leading.

This is something I've always wondered - Meadville rebuilt those ballast cars pretty late in the EL years, but you rarely see them in service. They rebuilt a LOT of these cars (at least 50 if not more), so where were all of them? Todd's photo shows two of them in service. Were these assigned by region, or did they go wherever ballast was needed?
