A
Christmas Story or Fable?

A conductor, an electrician, a car knocker, and an engineer all sang in a
choir group that practiced in a small church up on the hill Saturday
nights. One winter night after they arrived they discovered the organ had
broken, thus there would be no musical accompaniment for them that evening.
As they sat and looked out the window, they stared down towards the coach
yard. After a bit of silence they began to be inspired, and started to
collectively write a song. When they were done they thought, if the organ
isn’t fixed by tomorrow morning, they might just have to sing it in
church.

Well, Rusty King, and Keith Taylor stopped by later that night and made a
quick easy fix of the organ, so what they wrote down and practiced, was
never heard after that night. The next morning the janitor picked up a
piece of scrap paper off the floor with these verses scribbled on it. He
didn’t throw it away, but stuck it in his pocket. Sunday evening he went
down to his layout in the basement. He took out a box that had a very nice
scratched built Lackawanna MU motor car in it, and tucked the piece of
paper under the model.

Now, the conductor, electrician, car knocker, engineer as well as the
janitor have all passed on. The old janitor’s model has been sold on Ebay
three times, each time for more than the purchased price. It’s open for
conjecture whether that was because of the model, or the hand scratched
verses that have always accompanied the box. It does reflect “what might
have been, and will never be again.”

Silent Night

Holy Night

All is calm

All is bright

All the MUs are sleeping tonight

Worn and weary, yet ready for another mile

Sleep in heavenly peace

Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent Night

Holy Night

Employee’s pray at the sight

The MUs are resting for they have to go far

Heavenly hosts sing hallelujah

In them a savior is born

In them a savior is born

Silent Night

Holy Night

All is calm

All is bright

Resting for the commute that morning will bring

Old timers so worn, yet oh so willing

Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night

Holy night

Pantographs rise to gather thine light

3000 volts will power their pace

With the dawn of redeeming grace

The MUs will again race

The MUs will again race

Silent night

Holy night

Only the dynamotors are purring tonight

But with dawn their amperage will take flight

Alleluia what a glorious sight

A venerable commuter was born

A venerable commuter was born
