Great questions. As was said before, the former ROW parallells Franklin
Street for most of its run north of the Thruway through South Nyack/Nyack.
There is still evidence of the presence of a railroad, from the roadbed, to
the placement of buildings (small warehouses and businesses, and an
icehouse, just north of the Thruway) and the arrangement of streets. Depot
Place in South Nyack is indeed the site of the old depot, now a park.
Historically, right across from the depot site is the firehouse of
Orangetown Hose, the oldest department in Rockland County dating back to the
1840's, though the original firehouse is long gone. Further up, the yard
was at the block that ends at the corner of Franklin and Depew Streets, on
the east side of the road. This site is cleared and is a grassy park and
community garden with no railroad artifacts except for the plot of the land
which is still largely open. However, the block on the west side of Franklin
(N-S running street)and Depew (E-W running street) is mostly intact back to
the turn of the 20th century, anchored by the 2-story brick building that
was historically a grocery but now houses a clothing store and optical shop.
This building was the subject of a major renovation in 2003 which I helped
to work on (low-voltage electrical) and has spurred a renovation of the rest
of the vintage row.

I have attached two pictures of the South Nyack depot. I have no idea of
the exact year of the photos and why two different depots are labeled South
Nyack.

Any questions about this, or Erie remnants in Rockland or the Pascack
Valley Line, feel free to email me or respond to the list. Glad to share!

Keith -- after youcross the Thruway, keep going north. The Erie ROW crossed
the Thruway to your right; it's a rail-trail now. It simply went north
through South Nyack (little station there) and ended just south of the main
drag in Nyack. There was a turntable, station, and three tracks for
runaround and storage. I haven't been there in years, but I would expect
the clues to be evident, at least until the turntable. I'll bet that's gone
to parking or development -- that might even have happened after
dieselization : they didn't turn the RS's.
