Subject: RE: : (erielack) Coil steel cars on EL's East End?
"9067_Greenville_builders_photo.jpg" - image/jpeg, 618x425 (256c)

A coil steel car (see attached shot of an EL coil steel car) is usually a
trough-like car that has a removable cover. They replaced, as you noted,
earlier gondolas that were used for this purposes. These coil steel cars
held the loads much more securely, however.

As you can see in the photos, the EL's cars were really a skeletal flat car
that has coil "beds" attached to them, while other coil car designs were
built around an integrated coil bed.

Tell me about coil cars. Are they gondola cars with a cover added?
The
summer that I worked in the shipping department of Republic Steel in
Youngstown in the 1950s, steel coils were shipped in open gondolas.
