Yes, the station is looking better for sure. Attached are a few shots I took
in February 1977 when things were not looking so good.

Running around doing New Year's Eve errands today, I decided to try and
catch NJ Transit's mid-day train from Hackettstown to
Hoboken. My daughters and I arrived at the Netcong, NJ station with minutes
to spare and I took a short video of the train departing
with an ALP45DM dual-mode diesel pushing.

It made me realize that a LOT has changed in Netcong since DL&W and EL
years, but that surprisingly some things haven't changed at
all. The two attached photos demonstrate this to a degree. The cab car shot
is at the same location I'm at (the tree is still
there, a bit out of frame in my video to the right, but looking much more
scraggly today). The Bob Pennisi view of the 1406
arriving on May 17, 1966 is comparable to the going away portion of my video
(note the Shop Rite sign visible in both for
comparison). A lot of the infrastructure in the 1406 shot is gone - the
entire Sussex Branch trackage, Netcong Coal and Lumber,
the semaphores, the sign for the traffic circle on Route 46 (it was just
removed) - but trains still make their way to Netcong every
weekday. And the station is in better shape than it's been in for at least
60 years.

It's uplifting to a degree, ain't it?

Enjoy my final train of 2013! And Happy New Year to all!

- Paul
