"Supporting the Lackawanna F3s"

We're in the home stretch, gang -- if you haven't yet, today is the last chance to vote for Locomotive Magazine's first-ever diesel preservation grant. Tri-State Chapter NRHS and ARHS's set of Lackawanna F3s are a strong contender. But other popular projects may surge, like the last minutes of an eBay sale. The easiest way to vote is to e-mail the editor Greg McDonnell. Simply click "reply" or "reply all," then send. Each e-mail address is a vote. The prize: $1000 to the diesel locomotive restoration project with the most votes. Vote for as many locomotives as you wish, but please also vote for the Lackawanna F3s. And share this request with your friends and family.

If voting by facebook, click on the link, find the earliest post by Mike Del Vecchio and "like" it. Each "like" is a vote. On facebook you'll see the many other projects also going on, showing that locomotive preservation is alive and growing. Again, vote for as many as you wish, but please also support the Lackawanna F3s. https://www.facebook.com/TrainsMagazine/posts/10152100331955050?comment_id=31155831¬if_t=like

Seeking this grant is part of a fund raising effort to replace the worn-out air compressor on Lackawanna 663, and soon. The F3s have committed to Norfolk Southern and Spencer Shops (N.C.) to attend the greatest gathering of historic streamliner diesels of our lifetime in May 2014, and we need to replace the air compressor to make that trip. In addition, the Tri-State and ARHS "F-Troop" are working to have the B-unit painted in time to present an A-B-A set. These are the oldest operating and unaltered F-units in all of preservation, and as such they've become nationally significant and an important part of the locomotive preservation movement. And they've been the subject of many terrific photographs.

We are looking to raise about $5000 for the transplant. We're more than half-way there, so this grant will be a big help if we win. Every little bit helps. If you can contribute any amount, there are paypal buttons at www.tristaterail.org, and our address is:

During the initial restoration, the ELHS, ARHS, Tri-State and Jersey Central Chapter NRHS were big contributors and helped make the dream possible. The two F3 cabs have been successfully hauling kids and passengers over the Poconos on Steamtown trains, debuting at the 2010 NRHS Convention in Scranton. In their current paint scheme, they have a home at a National Park to keep them available for future generations. Please support them if you can.

Thanks in advance, all, and Happy New Year. Attached is a photo of the old compressor coming out, and of the 663 the day we discovered the 65-year-old air compressor had worn out. ....
