Subject: Long Island Railroad proposed tunnel Flatbush Ave. to PRR Jersey City 1892
"LIRRtunnel1892.jpg" - image/jpeg, 142926 bytes, 1200x429 (24bit)

Here is the map of the proposed Long Island Railroad tunnel from
Flatbush Avenue Terminal through lower Manhattan to the Pennsylvania
Railroad Depot in Jersey City, from the report on the announcement in
the Sunday December 12, 1892 Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

In the article it was noted how this would give the Pennsylvania
Railroad "an advantage denied and apparently inaccessible to its most
powerful rival." Co-operating on the project were Frank Thompson and AJ
Cassett" of the PRR. ....I didn't know the LIRR and PRR were closely
associated before Corbin's death and the takeover of the LIRR by the
PRR..

I also wonder whether the Hudson and Manhattan RR tunnels were in any
way related to this project which Corbin said was definitely to be done.
The H&M (current plugged PATH tubes to the WTC) sees to follow this
exact proposed route. The H&M opened 1898ish, right?

By the way the South Ferry went to Montague Street where the only cable
car in Brooklyn brought passengers up the hill down Montague..
