Re: (erielack) Fwd: Sale of Erie Lackawanna Station Sign

I agree........much better that they had suffered the fate of the magnetophones - which I told in an earlier post were all thrown in the Chenango River from the ERIE bridge. For those of u who still want to look, it was on the South bank & the West side of the bridge. There were at least 20 or 30 of them laying on the rocks, some in the water. BTW - I know the 'boss' who was named in the rumor. I agree it pisses me off when some nitwits steal a bell from a restored steam eingine, but when a Company is trashing its' own history I just wish I'd taken more stuff...........at least it'd be around now. I'll be selling my old builders plate off the 621 that followed me to Auto-Train in Florida at the Scranton convention. (I could, of course, let it be scrapped when the company (AT) went belly up).

Does an historic artifact lose its value when removed from it's original
location? Do we as "railfans" want to encourage vandalism to say
nothing of encouraging theft? It was a popular rumor during EL days
that a railroad "boss" had a fine collection of Erie Railroad clocks
that had formerly been in stations. I was never in his house and never
saw him take a clock from a station, open or closed. If the clocks were
"liberated" doesn't that reduce their value?
