(erielack) July calendar pictures... better late than never! :)

Hi folks,

Due to work and vacation committments, I haven't yet commented on the July EL calendar photos... so here we go!

The ELHS July calendar shot is a beauty - a wonderful sweeping vista of an eastbound freight near Foster, PA on the former DL&W main. For a railroad nearing its demise, it sure did put on a wonderfully dynamic appearance. The verdant green hillside and the fresh contrasting ballast set off that colorful 1970s-era train wonderfully. The DL&W steel milepost at the right doesn't hurt, either! And for the freight car fan, there's plenty to see here - the trio of Sterling Salt covered hopper at the far left, plain-jane modernized scheme RDG boxcar just ahead of them, wonderful bulky loads in the gondolas at the start of the distant curve, and what appears to be a yellow cylindrical Center-Flow covered hopper right before you reach the tree on the curve. And of course, a pair of burly U36Cs leading the way. Imagine the warm summer day, the characteristic GE "chop chop chop" sound, and the colorful sight approaching you. A nice thought on this (heat index 100-degree) hot day - at least here in NJ. :)

The Weekend Chief calendar shot is certainly an interesting one - I'm not familiar enough with the train, so I'll let Ed Montgomery's earlier comments on this scene stand here. There's a (DL&W?) boxcar at the freighthouse at left as a Sussex Branch train waits at the Netcong station. The "hood" on the upper headlight is still in place on the lead F3A, making the scene appear older than it actually is. The order board is a nice touch in this scene. The cinder ballast all around shows the importance of this branch at this time, sadly. The photo has a very "hazy" and "grainy" feel to it - part of it could be the weather, but part of it could be inferior slide processing or a non-Kodachrome brand of slide. A shame, since it's a delightful shot. But I'll take what I can get :)
