For that matter, I'd like to see the Erie and DL&W return and run by steam and a handful of first generation diesels with pasenger trains and diners and sleepers everywhere too. A nice Sturday Round Trip to Beckers Dairy out in Sussex County would be nice, too.

Just think, of New Jersey had enjoyed a Robert Moses, all the highway bridges would be too low to run buses everywhere, and maybe the percentage of routes still with passenger service would be the same as say, on Long Island.

Of course, I'd also like to see ACF Motorailers running hourly between Susquehanna Transfer and Paterson City, supplementing the NYS&W's fine Butler service (and maybe a through express to Wilkes Barre too).
But the weekend Montclair service remains an extnesion of a shuttle that exists only for the handful of M&E passengers who still want to go to Hoboken (it should be noted that some of the Erie-side trains run virtually empty Secaucus Jct to Hoboken). It runs at virtually no extra cost to NJT because of those hourly crew rates. But extending it beyond Montclair incurs real costs -- and has nothing to do with railfan mythology regarding noisy trains etc etc.
Cheers,
Jim Guthrie
