Re: (erielack) Suburban Fares Then and Now
These statistics are all valid. However, during that time the railroads
were asking for fare increases to cover cost and most of the time they were
denied. I believe the difference in fares between the 30s and 50s on DL&W
timetables were only dimes apare. I think the one-way fare from Mountain
View to NY was around 60 cents with the ferry free. In 1960 the fare was 86
cents plus a quarter for the ferry. Fares crept up slowly into the 70s and
then took off when DOTNJ and then NJT found out how much it actually cost to
run a railroad. With fuel prices increasing I wouldn't be surprised to see
a lot more individuals with jobs in New York will be working at home one,
two, or three days a week and only commuting on the other days. Much of
that is probably going on now.
