Yes, the switcher models did. When I began my railroad career on the
Morristown & Erie Railroad they had an S-4, No. 14, and an RS-1, No.15. No 14
had its fuel tank directly under the cab floor with the filler cap under the
left rear cab window. The sight glass was located behind a small door on the
other side. The RS-1's fuel tank was located between the trucks. No. 15 also
had a tank under the cab floor but this was origianlly a water tank for the
steam generator that had been in the short hood when the M&E bought the unit
-From the Navy.
