Tenders: Large berk tanks were ordered and delivered
with the last 0-8-0's built. This was very common as a
number of roas did this ( most notable being the NKP).
Those tanks went to storage and the Small vanderbuilts
and older modified USRA's in storage went on the
0-8-0's. When the the berks with the straight sided
tanks came in for overhaul the new ones were put on
and the K-5's got the berk tanks and the trickle down
effect started. I have shots of the same Mike over 20
years with no less than five different tanks behind
it. And a pacific with 4.
Lima also built two seperate orders ( of QTY : 25 and
15 ) of tenders only in the early 40's , for the Berks
and the originals went to the Mikes and Pacifics.
There was, from shop records,a constant rotation of
tenders. Tenders were rebuilt and put in storage and
when an engine came in for a rebuild the tenders were
swapped out and the rebuilt for the next engine
suitable for it.
As for the vanderbuilt tanks it was a standard
design, which matches very closely to SP tanks built.
How it came to be that Harriman roads used Vanderbuilt
tank designs i would like to know. As does the
original K-1 pacifics and the consols that were
rebuilt into the G-20 class. Both of those classes
were Harriman Standard designs and Identical to
SP(p-1) pacifics and GM&O pacifics. It was in the
rebuilding and alterations that gave them the unique
Erie flavor. Changes were different smokebox
fronts, pilots, valve gear, appliances / with placement
changes, engine truck wheel replacement, and most
notably the cabs Said east coast and especially Erie.
