(erielack) Riding the Commuter Lines

It's been nearly 30 years since I left NJ, and things have changed. Wonder
if any can answer some questions:
Mileposts north of Suffern sometimes are identified "JS" or something other
than JC, but the mile number remains the same. What do these initials mean?
If I recall correctly, NS/Metro-North abandoned commuter service on the old
Main Line and now runs everything via the freight cutoff. I looked for
where the old main and cutoff might meet, but couldn't find any evidence of
the junctions. Where were they, and what still exists?
Does the east-west track from Suffern still connect to the NJ&NY/Pascack
Valley line?
I'll have more questions--when I remember them!
Thanks.
Ken B.
