Mike,
Contrary to popular belief, NO, these cars were NOT equipped with internal
tanks, but rather were designed to handle milk in 40 quart cans. Companies
like Bordens and others, as well as the GPEX/ Pfaudler cars were equipped
with internal tanks. The DL&W cars were typically not rebuilt, certainly not
with steel sides, but some of them did make it into M.O.W. service. The
Lackawanna only ever had two steel milk cars that were converted from box
cars, and did feature mechanical refrigeration.
