By looking at the other main, you can see that the derail is only 2 lengths of
rail away from the diamond. That makes it about 80 feet away.
Is this more of a legal appeasement thing, rather than a functional thing?
Especially when the derail direction path is into the tower.
How common was it for DL&W trains to wrong rail?
