This is getting off topic I suppose, but didn't the DO pull up a lot of the
tracks as well? That alone is expensive to replace.

I seem to recall reading that...  actually, wait a minute. *paws through
pile of magazines next to table*  Railpace 6/86:  "...the trackage from
route 22 west to Summit (former EL interchange) is lightly used.  In recent
years , the RV stored surplus cars on these lines [also refers to the former
CNJ interchange].  The Summit interchange was last used in 1976, and it is
unlikely this portion will be reopened."  So it's been out of service, or
close to it, for 26 years - unneeded when all the roads around it became
one.
