Re: (erielack) Coal trains to Portland cement



In Syracuse it seems to have come full circle.  One of the facilites the CNY
NRHS uses, is an old cement plant.  The silos are used for fly ash and some
of the small buildings for storage.  There's an abandoned bunkhouse/shower
facility and an empty office, too.  With all that I have to wonder if there
was a furnace at one time that's long since been removed...   there even was
a car mover at the end of one of the silo tracks, that is about 20 years
rotted beyond repair.  At the least, there was unloading, storage and
bagging going on there though.  This was all off the DL&W in Jamesville.


Today, the successor to Blue Circle Cement operates a transloading silo
right next to the main at CP-293 (former SJ).  While the side tracks are
actually old West Shore mains, it's served off the connector to the DL&W
north (not sure if this was put in in '73 with the EL, or later when Conrail
eliminated the DL&W underpass).  Here though, the cement comes in in hoppers
and leaves in a truck.
