(erielack) The forlorn SDP

However you carve it semantically, the old EMD did not get enough interest
to mobilize a quickie fundraiser. I have been involved with that sort of
thing when the piece available warranted it.

Maybe we are seeing a sign of something else?

Maybe there really isn't a need to save an SDP45?

When you think about it, the great historical period of railroad development
was 1830-1880. That's really when railroads made an historic impact.

You can argue that up until 1950 or so, railroads were still a vibrant part
of the fabric of the nation.

Perhaps, while locomotives like Southern #1401 deserve status as a national
treasure, the run of the mill diesel from the 1960's does not.

Little, if any, history beyond esoteric foaming, actually surrounds these
beasts. We think they are cool because we like trains, just like people who
like old cars and airplanes. Really, how many cars and planes are truly
"historic?"

What we have yet to do (as a hobby on a whole) is figure out what to do with
these antiques, which are essentially toys. Expensive toys, but toys none
the less. The car and plane guys do a much better job of organizing and
sharing their toys.

The diner project will preserve what was once an important part of life. It
has true historic merit.

But the SDP?

Would it have been just a toy?
