Re: Trackage rights to Watkins Glen, NY (was: (erielack) Salt Traffic - EL Salt Covered Hopper

Well, that's what it's all about. The longer you dig the more you find out!

The one time I saw an black EL GP going through Montour Falls was outside
the building where I was attending a model railroad dinner.

According to Bill Caloroso's book on the Emira Branch of the PRR, the Erie
had bought the Chemung RR that went from Elmira to Watkins. Then when the
line was built that became the PRR route up to Sodus the bought the Cehmung
from the Erie, but the Erie reatin right to go to Watkins and the PRR (or
predecessor) got trackage rights from Southport to Horseheads on the Erie.

Pretty sure the line was worked out of Elmira. Gang Mills was pretty new
facility and I doubt many crews worked out of there. There are a few netions
of Watkins buried in employee timetables. I thin Erie actually owned some
sidings there.

There are guys around Elmira who should know about the EL working to
Watkins. Don Jilson is one. Ex PRR engineer. You can trace him down through
Bill Caloroaso who is at wcaloroso_@_stny.rr.com. Bill know other retirees in
the area.

Hope all is well with you. Still see those multi compartment tank cars at
Coors brewery once in a while but eiother it is blocked in by other cars or
I don't have my camera!
