Re: (erielack) The EL Hot 100...number 5!

Thanks, Paul.

Any thoughts on how one might go about modeling one of these cars? They look similar to the Athearn 85' flat.

BSC came late to the long-flat party with its 85' car of 1960. TT assigned
Class F85c. They were very similar to the ACF F85a, with C-channel sidesill
and initial production with above-sill tie-down plate. By late 1960, BSC
also switched to tie-down bars within the web of the C-channel. Most cars
were assigned to TOFC service, the balance received trilevel racks (RTTX).
Other buyers included SOO Line (20 cars), SP (100 cars leased to PFE) and EL
(100 cars). EL's fleet was unique in that the hitches were reversed such
that the trailers "faced" the "A"-end rather than the "B"-end. These cars
were conveyed to TT in 1963 when EL joined the flatcar pool, becoming TTX
102507-102605, numbers embedded in the F85f series. The F85f superseded the
F85c in 1963, the chief difference was slightly wider 8'6" deck vs the 8'2"
of the F85c.

The car in the photo is a Phase-2 with tie-down bar. Tank trailers were not
routinely handled as TOFC loads, but on occasion, brand-new tankers rode
flatcars from the manufacturer, as was the case here: note the plywood
sheets banded to the control panels. They had to be circus-loaded, as there
were no structural members to enable mechanized loading.
