The top three 89' intermodal cars seen on EL corresponds to the top three TT
89' intermodal cars of the late EL years, and in correct order. All three
are TOFC-only cars. The F89e replaced the 85' F85b in the P-S catalog when
all the builders standardized to 89' length for TOFC cars. 2564 cars were
built between 7/63 and 4/68 in series 250000-252646. Aside from the 180 cars
placed in autorack service (56 BTTX and 124 RTTX), the majority were built
for TOFC service. I am not aware of any cars built for other companies. The
F89e with 89'0" deck continued the S-channel design and B-end channel
stiffeners on both sides, but omitted the chain anchors. They used the ACF
Model 2 hitch, although some late-production series may have used the P-S
LP-2, the first successful P-S hitch (earlier hitch designs used on the F87
were prone to failure). The F89eh was the version with 10" hydraulic EOCC.
Approximately 300 were built in 1963-64, mostly for autorack service. The
lookalike F89v with 89'4" deck followed on the F89e in mid-1968, but only
200 were built prior to the switch to flush-deck design for standard-height
flats later that year. They used the LP-2 hitch.
Either class would be a relatively easy KB using a pair of Athearn F85b TOFC
car blue box kits. You would add 4' or 4'4" between the bolsters and
eliminate the chain anchor sections from the sidesills.
