(erielack) The EL Hot 100...honorable mention #17

List...

Like many other roads in the 1960s, the Southern Railway had a number of older 40' boxcars rebuilt to extend their useful lives. The Southern sent boxcars to Berwick and to Hamburg Industries for rebuilding in the 1968-69 time frame. The cars returned with larger 9' door openings, with either Youngstown or Camel sliding doors applied, deeper reinforced side sills, cut down ladders, and no running board. The cars were listed in the equipment register in the 46000 - 48499, 48500 - 49499, 49500 - 49999, and 500000 - 500174 number series. In all, 34 examples were found in the EL consist sheets, which would put this car in the 87-89 range in the EL Hot 100.

...taken in Boonton, NJ.

Locations...
Systemwide, most often hauling either paper or furniture to northeast distributors.

Model...
None that I am aware of. Like many 40' boxcar rebuilds, a modeler could kitbash one using a Branchline Trains kit or Atlas car as a starting point. The larger door could be obtained from Kadee.
