Concrete coal towers in Salamanca rail yard come down
SALAMANCA — For nearly 100 years, four concrete coal towers stood in the Erie Railroad’s train yard in downtown Salamanca.
As part of a project by the Seneca Nation of Indians, the 54-foot structure seen from northern Main Street for decades came down throughout the day on Monday.
“The demolition, supervised by the Nation’s Environmental Protection Department, is part of the Seneca Nation’s ongoing efforts to clean up our Allegany Territory and address environmental concerns stemming from previous railroad activities,” said Phil Pantano, spokesman for the Seneca Nation of Indians.
