Re: (erielack) The EL Hot 100...honorable mention #6

Pat and list, The closest model that I know of is the Atlas ACF Cylindrical. One of the main changes to make it "closely" represent a North American car is the end cages need modification. There is full ladder type supports on both sides at the ends. Plano makes a kit that can be used for this. As far as decals, Microscale makes set 87-1483 which is just reporting marks and numbers that include the Roman style NAHX. You would need to use one of there data sets to complete the necessary lettering.

List...

Privately owned freight cars are difficult to group just by number series from the Equipment Register because for the large leasing companies like North American Car Corporation, there is no information given as to whom the car is leased. One large number series, such as NAHX 52000 - 52444 could be leased to many different companies that might have painted the cars very differently. In the EL consist sheets, this number series contains 48 examples, which would be good enough for 55-57 place, but only if all the cars were painted the same. The only picture I could find was for a plain gray car with black lettering. The cars might have been built by North American Car to the same design as the ACF cylindrical center flow hopper, with small dimensional differences.

Locations...
Most of the cars in the database appeared to be carrying salt. Groups of loaded cars were found going to Chester Salt in Chester, PA, International Salt in Jersey City, and Linde Chlorine Products in Grasselli, NJ. The database only had one empty, going back to International Salt in Retsof, NY, on the Genesee & Wyoming.

Model...
If these cars were built by North American, then strictly speaking we do not have a model. However, the cars appear to be virtually indistinguishable from the similar ACF cylindrical center flow hopper.
