Re: (erielack) The EL Hot 100...honorable mention #8
Pat and list, Recent rumors have mentioned this car being produced. I can't for the life of me remember where I read about it. Well know SP modeler Elizabeth Allen has bashed several of these cars. Of course another one on my own 'bash list.

Like many other railroads, the Southern Pacific rebuilt a large number of their older 40' box cars in order to extend their service life. In the case of the SP, that would be the lumber trade. Several older classes of 40' boxcars were given an enlarged 10' 3" door opening and reinforced side sills, while some had replacement ends. The SP cars were distinctive because of the larger door that had a diagonal yellow stripe. The cars were found in several series beginning with 172000 and running through 192174, with some minor variation depending on whether or not the ends were replaced. Altogether, 45 examples were found in the consist sheets, which would put this freight car at 61-62 in the EL Hot 100.

These cars could be seen going back and forth through Chicago hauling lumber to just about any lumber yard along the EL, particularly in the northeast. A number of them were also used to haul "metallic ore" (copper concentrate?) to Phelps Dodge Corp. at Nichols Siding, NY, on the Long Island RR.
Model...
None.
