Re: (erielack) EL SDP45 sold to Museum....

The units sold for about scrap prices, except for the $33K ex-AT&SF unit.
Considering what it would cost to get an operable unit of almost any other
EMD model... even a GP7/9 would be three times that.. a GP38 more than 10
times. Most of what I have seen for sale for mid-teens are friction
bearing, 50 year old, Alco and GE switchers, in dubious mechanical
conditions. Even a used U30B had an asking price of $60,000 - rather
unrealistic given the market for used GE's has 99% of those long since
scrapped (so try finding parts for this one). Which was mainly the point -
bad turbo or not, big engine with limited uses or not, 20-cyl prime mover or
not, $16,000 is a bargain basement price for a locomotive that is ready to
ship.. even if you buy two to have a good turbo on hand for it. A running
unit could likely be leased to someone long enough to repay the initial
costs in acquiring the unit to begin with ($65 or so a day for 9 months
would do it).

of folks are saying "wow, that sold cheaply," I know of few folks who
actually have the financial wherewithal to say that $16,000 is "cheap."
Particularly when the unit a) has a blown turbo, and b) would cost $$$ just
to move it east!
