I remember this too.  I was told that when Public Service built catenary
type transmission towers over the tracks across the meadows there was
concern about radio communications so North Newark became a sort of
repeater location.  This was line-of-site and I thing PSE&G paid for it in
exchange for using the ROW for their transmission line.  It quickly came
down when trains were diverted to the DL&W Montclair Branch.  I believe all
signals were still controlled by copper.
