Where has NS or CSX used any CR predecessor logos? Someone at Altoona
stenciled on a stylized PRR under the cab numbers on some ex-CR locos, but
aside from that I have not seen any other pre-CR logos used.

CSX uses NYC reporting marks on cars and NS uses PRR reporting marks on locos,
they have custody of those AAR designations, but I wouldn't call those logos
and they don't "own" them per se.

I have been under the impression that the EL herald went into the public
domain with the dissolution of the corporation in 1992.

Didn't American Premiere Underwriters (Penn Central) snub some guy who tried
to clain rights to the PRR Keystone logo so he could charge people to use it?
Told the guy that they owned it and he should go away before he got sued?

I have never heard of permission being obtained to use CR predecessor logos
for for-profit modeling or memorabilia use.

CSX is very finicky about the use of their trademark. They grant permission
for non-profit railfan use of their logo (such as on web pages) as a simple
non-exclusive license with a form you sign and send back to them. They
actively hunt down people who use their logo and tell them they have to sign
it or remove the logo. They don't do the same thing for CR and/or
predecessors. NS (to the best of my knowledge) doesn't seem to care about
their logo being used on fan websites and hasn't pursued a licensing
agreement with any webmasters. I host a lot of CSX and NS fan sites and CSX
has contacted me to track down the webmasters, but NS has not.
